Gurugram University - GU

About

ABOUT US

India has been a light house of knowledge for over eight centuries in the ancient times, infact, it was fondly called “Vishva Guru”. It had many renowned centres for learning including Nalanda, Takshila, Ujaini, Vikrmietc until they were destroyed by invaders-Nalanda was proclaimed as, “One of the most important universities in the world was developed not in the medieval west, but right here in India: Nalanda University…was instrumental in producing people who are capable of understanding and articulating what it means to have universal knowledge, knowledge that is applicable across cultures and across times. ”

Dr Geoffrey Durham

The Nalanda University attracted scholars and students from near and far, some travelling all the way from Tibet, China, Korea and Central Asia in quest for knowledge. It was a centre of excellence not only for Ancient Indian wisdom, Buddhist studies and philosophy but for Medicine and Mathematics, Astronomy and Logic as well. After departing knowledge to thousands of students for centuries, Nalanda ceased to exist as new universities were opening up in Bologna, Paris and Oxford at the beginning of the second millennium century. The shift of centres of knowledge from East to West was symbolic of the eventual transfer of power which followed within half a millennium. There is now a perfect opportunity to recreate the hallowed universalism of Nalanda as a centre of knowledge.

The Indian higher education system has undergone rapid expansion. In less than 20 years, the country has created additional capacity for a mammoth 40 million students. While the scale of this expansion is remarkable in itself, what set it apart from earlier decades of equally aggressive expansion is a deliberate strategy and an organized design of the university system. In this learner-centred paradigm of education, students are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their learning outcomes The university ceases to be a fountainhead of knowledge, filling the empty receptacles of students’ minds; instead students now actively participate in the discovery of knowledge. This learner-centred approach will help resolve the problem of equity in higher education.

The decision of the Haryana Government under the able, clean and dynamic leadership of Mr Manohar Lal Khattar to open up a University at Gurugram, endorses the plan to re-establish the Indian Universities, underscores the commitment to rebuild India and particularly the State of Haryana as a centre of knowledge.

To sum up, the aim of Gurugram University is to produce among the best-in-class knowledge creators, problem solvers and process managers- who will display deep social, cultural, ecological and national sensibility- and collaborative leaders and responsible citizens.

Gurugram University is planning to be one of the most prestigious universities in Haryana, and is likely to be a microcosm of the Indian nation, attracting students from every nook and corner of the country and from every group and stratum of society. The university has started functioning from the campus of newly constructed Rao Tula Ram College of Science and Commerce. Gurugram University (GU) will soon emerge as a global university with a wide offering of programs and courses spanning varied educational fields. The university believes in creating evangelists of knowledge; people who spread the light quite literally. Our premier University will draw many foreign students due to its world class facilities, which will be constantly reviewed and upgraded to reflect the latest trends and developments in higher education. In the last few years, Gurugram has developed into a hub of medical tourism, similarly Gurugram University will transform the city into an educational hub. Scholarships will also be offered by the University which will help in character building, skill enhancement and nation building.

Vision

Gurugram University aspires to be a front runner in global education; role model for institutional excellence, trans-cultural quality learning, intellectual growth, contemporary research, capacity building and nurturing socially and morally responsible disciples through a learner- centric approach. The university seeks to ensure a journey from studentship to epitome of discipleship by working on academic, professional, technical, industry and life skills of its students.Motivation behind our Vision: The name of our city “Gurugram” carries forward to the University which itself is after the name of Guru Dronacharya. Since ages, the story of Eklavya (a character from the Indian Epic-Mahabharata) has come to define exemplary discipleship. Eklavya was the son of a poor hunter who wanted to learn archery from Dronacharya –a renowned teacher to the members of royal family, not permitted to teach the state art to anybody else. It was forbidden to make anyone as powerful as the princes for the safety of the region. As Eklavya in his heart had already accepted Dronacharya as his Guru, he made a statue of his Guru and learned archery with sincerity and practice. He became so good at it that, he would hear the sound of the animal, shoot an arrow at it and claim the animal.Dronacharya was baffled when he got to know about Eklavya and decided to meet him. Eklavya welcomed his Guru with great honor and love. Dronacharya asked for Guru Dakshina in the form of thumb of the right hand of Eklavya. Eklavya without a second thought gave the thumb of his right hand to his Guru.In this story Dhronacharya is commonly viewed as being cruel and self-centred, but Dhronacharya blessed Eklavya with immortality by asking him for his thumb, thereby, “Raising his status from studentship to epitome of discipleship.” So when people think of devotion, they think of Eklavya, and not Arjuna. Dronacharya took the blame on him and uplifted his student which reflects that even if Guru is wrong, if your devotion is true you can never go wrong.
