SVIMS was conceived in the year 1986 on the lines of AIIMS, New Delhi, and the foundation stone was laid on 18.4.86 by Late Sri.N.T.Rama Rao, the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh in the world-famous pilgrim town Tirupati. It was established with a view to providing Super Specialty facilities with nominal cost to the poor. The hospital started functioning from 26.2.93. by an Act of A.P. State Legislature. This Institute became a University in 1995 within a short time of establishment.
There are 41 departments in SVIMS, which offer an adequate number of courses for aspirants. Some of the eminent departments include Anatomy, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Forensic Science, Nephrology, Neurology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Oncology, Transfusion Medicine and Urology. SVIMS has three colleges under it: Medical, Nursing and Physiotherapy.
Sri Venkateswara Medical College offers an MBBS Course of total intake of 240 seats annually and these are allotted as 15% by All India Quota (AIQ) and the remaining 85% by Andhra Pradesh State Quota counseling.
Admission to Sri Venkateswara Govt Medical college is done through All India Medical Counselling as All India Quota 15 % of MBBS seats and remaining through Andhra Pradesh State medical counseling as State Quota 85% conducted by state medical authorities.
