Shooting Academy (ESA) is a dream that coach Sabir Khan always wanted to
live. With ESA becoming a reality now, Mr. Khan now aims to turn it into a
launchpad to produce champions of the future for Indian shooting sport.
A national-level shooter with a coaching experience of more than a decade,
Mr. Khan fueled his dream to coach by completing the National Rifle
Association of India-accredited coaching course in 2010. Since then, he has
gone on to produce innumerable national shooters, some of whom went on to
play for India and win medals on the international stage.
A Pathan from the state of Uttar Pradesh, Mr. Khan is not just earning a
living out of shooting but also providing young talented shooters the means
and expertise to an expensive sport that was unapproachable for the masses
not long ago.
He got his shooting DNA from his ancestors. They introduced him to shooting
as a competitive sport with a makeshift shooting range at home back in 1998.
Mr. Khan went on to play the National Championships and then decided to
take a plunge in coaching. He also played the 2019 National Championships in
50m Pistol.
Mr. Khan spent the most time as coach with the Sportzcraft Inc’s shooting
academy at the Guru Harkrishan Public School in Punjabi Bagh from 2012 to
2020. He quit his job earlier this year to pursue the dream of his own
coaching academy, but the coronavirus pandemic put his plans on hold.
While with Sportzcraft, Mr. Khan produced a number of international
shooters as well. To name a few, rifle shooters Mandeep Kaur Popli and Mohit
Kumar Agnihotri went on to play for India. While Mandeep participated in the
2015 Asian Shooting Championship in Kuwait, Agnihotri was part of the team
that won gold at the 2017 Asian Airgun Championship held in Japan.
Besides, Mr. Khan’s student Pooja Agarwal, who is a para pistol shooter,
won a silver medal at the 2017 World Cup in the UAE; and Yogita Lamba
participated in the 2015 Asian Air Gun Championships held in Delhi.
In 2018, Mr. Khan’s shooters Rahul Chauhan and Ruhan Kapoor were selected
for India trials; and in 2019, his noted students Naamya Kapoor, Khushi
Kapoor, Lavanya Chopra and Mahima Sachdeva went on to play the National
Championships and qualified for India trials.
