Sponsored Teachers' Training College

Sponsored Teachers’ Training College, Purulia has started its journey from the academic session 1964-65 with an intake of 40 (forty) women trainees under Burdwan University. The Government of West Bengal established the College vide G.O. No. 2318-Edn(G); dated the 6th July, 1964 as a Govt. Sponsored College with the name “Sponsored Teachers’ Training College for Women” under the auspices of the ‘Women Development Scheme’ during the Third Five Year Plan.

The college is situated in Purulia district, lying Chota Nagpur Plateau Region, in the Western Part of West Bengal with a beautiful campus covering an area of 5.18 acres of land. The college has been affiliated by the UGC u/s 2(f) from its inception and considered eligible to receive central assistance through UGC u/s 12(B). The Government of West Bengal has permitted the College for ‘Co-education’ teaching from the academic session 1969-70 with an increased intake of 200. The College has been renamed as “Sponsored Teachers’ Training College, Purulia”.

The College has earned the Recognition from the NCTE w.e.f. the academic session 2003-04 to run the B Ed Course with an intake of 100 vide No. ERC/7-37(ER-37.6.1)/2003/1553(1) Dated August 11, 2003. Validation of the B Ed Degree u/s 18B of the NCTE Act, 1993, has also been made for the students of this college who successfully completed the course from 1995-96 to 2002-03 vide No.ERC/WB-S/V-51/06/4794 (1) dated 08.12.2006. The College has also received the Revised Recognition Order from NCTE vide No. F.ERC/NCTE/APE00221/B.Ed.(Revised Order)/2015/32080; dated the 25th May, 2015. The college is presently affiliated under The West Bengal University of Teachers’ Training, Education Planning and Administration from the academic session 2018-20.Since the inception, the college has earned for itself the reputation of being a premier institute for Teacher Education in the State of West Bengal. 

The college has already celebrated Golden Jubilee Year in 2014-15. The admission procedure is governed by rules, prescribed by the Govt. of W.B., affiliating university and NCTE from time to time. The college offers training in teaching methods almost all the subjects taught in secondary schools. The college has a well equipped library containing various books for inspiring all round development activity in the students paving their path for self-realization and above all, in the greater performance of students in the university examination till now.The college has a fully equipped Physical Science, Life Science, Geography, Psychology Laboratory and ICT Resource Center, Art & Craft Room where students are given practical training with modern apparatus under the guidance of expert. In addition to this, the college has a 100 capacity Multipurpose Seminar Hall, Assembly Hall, Canteen, Cycle Stand, Play ground with Games & Sports facility and hostels, both for boys & girls. The community outreach programmes are organized by the NSS Unit of the college throughout the year. Thus, the college is gearing up for meeting the new challenges of higher education.
