History
Among those specialists who will always be needed by society, doctors are considered to be one of the first. One of the oldest universities in Ukraine, the Dnipropetrovsk Medical Academy, has a significant role in the development of the best national traditions of higher medical education .
Its history is closely connected with the history of our city - a major industrial, scientific and cultural center of the state. On October 4, 1784, Empress Catherine II signed a decree of the Senate, in which she ordered in the provincial city of the Ekaterinoslav governorate to establish a University with a higher medical school under him. It took 132 years for this document to open a medical school. In 1899 the Higher Mining School was opened, and on September 15, 1916, the Higher Women's Courses were established under it, as reported in the newspaper Russkoye Delo and in the Ekaterinoslavskaya Zemskaya Gazeta. On the same day, in the departure of the cathedral clergy, Archpriest OD Strakhnovsky offered a prayer.
The courses had two departments - physics and mathematics and medicine. The first director of the Ekaterinoslav Higher Women's Courses was the rector of the Mining Institute, Professor MI Lebedev, the dean of the medical department - Professor Ya.M. Dolzhansky.
The course organizers faced significant financial difficulties because the government did not provide any funding. The funds of the founding committee consisted of membership fees, donations, tuition fees (250 rubles per year). Significant assistance was provided by a wealthy businessman MS Kopylov, who, on the advice of Professor DI Yavornytsky, was approached by the Society for the Promotion of Women's Higher Education, which was in charge of the Higher Women's Courses.
From the first years of the establishment of the institution, the efforts of its leaders were aimed at creating not only the material base, but also scientific schools, finding staff, developing curricula and programs, compiling textbooks and manuals.
