The National Medical Commission (NMC) has reduced the mandatory internship period to one year, following student protests against the previous two-to-three-year requirement. This change is great news for foreign medical graduates (FMGs).
Following the public notice dated 7 June 2024, we can confirm that all students who have made up for online classes with physical classes on-site and then passed exams for an Indian MBBS are eligible for the one-year mandatory internship as set out in the CRMI Regulations 2021.
The Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) is a licensure exam conducted annually by the National Board of Examinations (NBE). It is for Indian students who have completed their medical education abroad and wish to practice medicine in India. The upcoming FMGE exam is scheduled for July 6, with admit cards to be released approximately one week before the exam.
Earlier, on June 18, FMGs gathered at the NMC office and urged the authorities to reconsider their circular as the new policy will result in a loss of time for the FMGs. The Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB) under the NMC released a circular asking the FMGs to continue their internship for another year. The circular stated that FMGs are obtaining the compensatory certificates “maliciously”.
