Diploma in Hearing Language and Speech (DHLS) is a Paramedical and Rehabilitation course that includes the study of anatomy, physiology, pathology (diseases or disorders) of hearing and speech, and rehabilitation.
This diploma programme is designed to generate manpower that will cater to the needs of individuals with communication disorders at the grass-root level. In this programme the students are trained to identify individuals with communication disorders and make appropriate referrals for further diagnosis.
The main aim of Diploma in Hearing Language and Speech course is to churn out trained professionals who will cater to the needs of patients suffering from language and communication disorders. DHLS course has been designed to impart skills such as – identification, evaluation and classification of the disorder (hearing, swallowing or communication disorder), treatment and rehabilitation process of the patient and monitoring patient’s progress.
Eligibility Criteria for Diploma in Hearing Language and Speech (DHLS)
1. Candidates should have passed 10+2 or its equivalent pass with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics.
2. At the time of admission, the candidate should be more than 17 years of age.
3. After graduation if you wish to specialise, then you can pursue a Masters in speech therapy offered by universities.
Admission Process
1. Most institutes follow merit based admission process. Marks scored by students in 12th board examination are taken into consideration.
2. Seats are allotted to deserving candidates on the basis of merit marks scored by them.
Career after Diploma in Hearing Language and Speech (DHLS)
DHLS holders can work as assistants to audiologists and speech-language pathologists in special schools (for children with hearing impairment, mental retardation etc.), clinics, District Disabilities Rehabilitation Centers and Rural Health Centers.
DHLS professionals have diverse job opportunities available in front of them. Government, private and self-employment opportunities are available in abundance in front of them. They may work under speech therapists or may carry out private practice.
They may work independently or as part of a team at healthcare setups like hospitals (government and private), clinics, NGOs, nursing homes, special schools and rehabilitation centers. Those who are interested in working independently may go for private practice.
