MD PSM ( Preventive and Social Medicine ) is a two-year doctorate degree program. The integration of the social aspects of health and disease, in theory, practice, and teaching led to the birth of Preventive & Social Medicine (PSM) or Social & Preventive Medicine.
Community Medicine deals with healthcare issues that affect communities as a whole. It is a branch that deals with the study of health and disease in a population or a defined community, with the goals to identify health problems and needs of that community, plan and implement measures to improve their health and evaluate the extent of effectiveness of these measures.

Eligibility Criteria for MD PSM ( Preventive and Social Medicine )
1. An aggregate score of 55% is required at the level of graduation, which should be completed at a university recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
2. All SC/ST candidates are given a relaxation of 5% in the minimum aggregate criteria.
3. Graduation should be completed in M.B.B.S or any other equivalent degree in a relevant discipline.
4. Candidates waiting for their final year examination’s result are welcomed too, but admission to such candidates will be given on a provisional basis.
5. Candidates should have completed a 1- year compulsory rotating internship after passing the final professional examination which is MBBS.
Admission Process
1. Admissions can be availed by submitting the duly filled application form to the selected institutes before the last date of submission.
2. Some institutes take direct admissions, some create merit lists and only a few of them conduct entrance tests to validate the knowledge of candidates.
3. Most of the medical colleges and institutes offering the course admit candidates on the basis of their performance in a relevant entrance test, conducted either at the National level (NEET PG) or at the institutional level.
Career after MD PSM ( Preventive and Social Medicine )
The subject contents mainly focus on Basic and Applied Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Demography, Environmental and Occupational Health, Sociology, Family Health, Health Promotion, Health education, Community Diagnosis and Health Research. This subject educates undergraduate students regarding health problems of the community, various national health programs and policies and primary health care approaches.
After successful completion of the course, one can find a job in various Government and Private Hospitals, and in areas like Research Institutes, Medical Colleges, Community Healthcare Centers, Railways and Military Services, Govt. Social Welfare Programs, Medical Labs, etc. where they can earn a monthly salary ranging between INR 40K and 90K.
